Avalon. A Modern Southern Town Square in the Heart of Alpharetta

avalon alpharetta

Few places in North Atlanta manage to feel both carefully designed and effortlessly lived-in. Avalon, located in the heart of Alpharetta, is one of them. More than a shopping center and far more than a dining destination, Avalon has become a modern interpretation of a Southern town square—one where people gather not just to buy things, but to spend time.

Since opening its first phase in 2014, Avalon has steadily grown into a full mixed-use district that blends retail, dining, living, hospitality, and community life into a single, walkable environment. For many residents of Alpharetta, Johns Creek, Roswell, and Cumming, Avalon is no longer a “place you go to”—it’s a place you return to.

A Brief History: How Avalon Came to Be

Avalon was developed by North American Properties, the same firm behind Atlantic Station in Midtown Atlanta. The vision was ambitious: create a pedestrian-first, European-inspired village that could serve as a cultural and social anchor for North Fulton County.

Before Avalon, this area of Alpharetta was largely commercial and car-oriented. The project introduced something new to the region at the time—a true live-work-play environment designed around strolling, lingering, and community interaction rather than quick transactions.

Avalon officially opened in October 2014 and quickly became a catalyst for Alpharetta’s transformation into one of metro Atlanta’s most vibrant suburban downtowns.

What Avalon Is Today

Avalon is organized around a long, open pedestrian boulevard lined with trees, fountains, benches, and café seating. Cars are present but intentionally secondary; walking is the default.

Today, Avalon includes:

  • Over 500,000 square feet of retail and dining
  • Luxury apartments and single-family residences
  • A boutique hotel
  • Office space
  • A movie theater
  • Seasonal events, pop-ups, and outdoor programming

The result is a place that feels active throughout the day—from morning coffee runs to late-evening dinners and movies.

Shopping: Curated, Not Overwhelming

Avalon’s retail mix leans toward quality over quantity. You’ll find a blend of national brands and curated boutiques, including fashion, beauty, home, and specialty stores.

Expect:

  • Upscale but approachable clothing brands
  • Athletic and lifestyle retailers
  • Specialty beauty and wellness shops
  • Local and regional boutiques mixed with national names

The layout encourages browsing without pressure. Even visitors who don’t intend to shop often find themselves wandering into stores simply because the environment invites exploration.

Dining: From Coffee to Celebrations

Dining is one of Avalon’s strongest draws. The range is broad, but consistently polished.

You’ll find:

  • Casual cafés and bakeries for daytime stops
  • Family-friendly restaurants
  • Chef-driven concepts for date nights and celebrations
  • Bars and wine-focused spots that come alive in the evening

Outdoor seating is a defining feature, especially in spring and fall, when the boulevard fills with conversation, music, and the sound of glasses clinking. Many locals treat Avalon as their default meeting place—easy to find, pleasant to linger in, and lively without feeling overwhelming.

Entertainment and Experiences

Avalon is intentionally designed to offer reasons to stay, not just pass through.

Highlights include:

  • A modern cinema with reserved seating
  • Seasonal outdoor events such as holiday markets, ice skating, and summer programming
  • Fitness studios and wellness spaces
  • Public art and thoughtfully designed gathering areas

During holidays, Avalon transforms—decorated, illuminated, and programmed in ways that make it feel festive without being commercialized.

Living at Avalon

Avalon is also home to residents who live above shops or in adjacent residential areas. This contributes to its authentic feel: people walking dogs in the morning, families out after dinner, residents greeting familiar shop owners.

Living spaces include:

  • Luxury apartments
  • Townhomes and single-family residences nearby
  • Easy access to offices, shops, and restaurants without needing a car

This residential component is what truly turns Avalon from a destination into a neighborhood.

The Hotel: A Staycation Favorite

The on-site hotel attracts visitors from outside North Atlanta, but it’s also popular with locals planning staycations or hosting out-of-town guests. Its presence adds to Avalon’s sense of being a complete, self-contained district rather than a shopping plaza.

How to Get There

Avalon is located just off GA-400 at Exit 9 (Haynes Bridge Road) in Alpharetta.

  • From Cumming: About 20–25 minutes
  • From Johns Creek: Around 15 minutes
  • From Roswell: Roughly 10–15 minutes
  • From Atlanta: Approximately 30–40 minutes, depending on traffic

Parking is ample and well-integrated, including decks that keep cars out of sight and preserve the pedestrian atmosphere.

Why Avalon Matters in North Atlanta

Avalon represents a broader shift in how suburban communities are being designed. Instead of isolating shopping, dining, and living into separate zones, Avalon brings them together in a way that feels intentional, human-scaled, and welcoming.

It’s a place for:

  • Meeting friends without a fixed agenda
  • Celebrating milestones
  • Taking a slow walk after dinner
  • Feeling part of something communal, even briefly

For North Atlanta residents, Avalon has become a shared reference point—a place everyone knows, visits, and experiences differently
