New McGinnis Ferry Road Widening Project in Johns Creek: What You Need to Know

Scope & Location

Johns Creek is working with Forsyth County and the Georgia Department of Transportation to widen McGinnis Ferry Road from Douglas Road eastward to Hospital Parkway (at Emory Johns Creek Hospital).
If you know the area, this covers the stretch including the Baptist Church (located at 6910 McGinnis Ferry Road) and continues east past Brookwood Road—all within the broader Phase I of the project.

What’s Being Built

  • Expansion from two to four lanes across approximately 2.5 miles, divided by a 20‑foot raised median.
  • North side will include a 16‑foot‑wide urban shoulder plus a 10‑foot‑wide multi‑use path (for biking, walking, scooters).
  • South side to feature a 12‑foot shoulder with a five‑foot sidewalk for pedestrians.
  • The Caney Creek bridge over the roadway is scheduled for full replacement as part of the upgrade.

Additional infrastructure includes new drainage, curb & gutter; storm drains; water lines; traffic signals; landscaping; erosion control; and pavement markings

Timeline & Phasing

  • Phase I officially began with a groundbreaking on March 11, 2025, at the Hospital Parkway intersection.
  • Expected to last approximately three years, with completion projected around early 2028.
  • Phase II will tackle the remaining western portion (from Ronald Reagan Boulevard to Douglas Road), once funding is secured.

Traffic & Community Impacts

  • Clearing and setup are underway now; expect single-lane closures, flagger control, and temporary rerouting.
  • Access to Johns Creek Baptist Church may be impacted—especially from parking areas along McGinnis Ferry during working hours.
  • Drivers should allow extra travel time during peak hours and watch for posted detours and staggered signals

Funding Partners

This vital corridor is supported by a combination of public investment:

  • $20M from the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT)
  • $14.4M from Forsyth County, via SPLOST funding
  • $8.1M from the City of Johns Creek, and
  • $1.5M from Fulton County Water & Sewer

Why It Matters

  • Eases congestion on a busy commuter route, especially for those heading to Emory Johns Creek Hospital or the emerging Town Center development.
  • Improves pedestrian and bike access, linking neighborhoods to the Big Creek Greenway over in Alpharetta.
  • Supports increased traffic flow as new residential, retail, and office developments—like Medley Johns Creek Town Center near the SR 400 interchange—move forward.
