McGinnis Ferry Work Reaches Christopher Robin Road, With Spring 2028 Still the Target

McGinnis Ferry Road’s long widening project has reached one of its most visible and disruptive stages near Christopher Robin Road and Concord Hall Drive, where drivers are now moving through a narrow work zone beside excavators, barriers and construction crews.
North Atlanta Star photographs taken Sept. 2 show crews working along the roadside just outside the existing lanes, with traffic reduced to a slow, flagger-controlled passage. The work is not the final widening or paving yet. It is the groundwork that has to come first: storm drainage, culvert excavation, utility relocation and retaining walls.
That is the same area identified in Johns Creek’s latest project update. Crews are installing drainage near Christopher Robin Road, shoring the culvert and building retaining walls at several points along the corridor while utilities are moved out of the path of the future roadway.
For drivers, it can feel as if the project is progressing slowly because much of this stage is happening underground or just beyond the pavement. But it is the work that will allow the road to be rebuilt without leaving buried pipes, power lines and drainage structures beneath the new lanes.
Phase I covers about 2.5 miles of McGinnis Ferry Road from Douglas Road to Hospital Parkway. When it is complete, the two-lane road will become four lanes with a raised median, new drainage and water infrastructure, sidewalks, a north-side multiuse path, traffic-signal improvements, landscaping and a replacement of the Caney Creek crossing.
The construction sequence still has a long way to go. Once the drainage, utility and retaining-wall work is complete, crews can build the road base for the added lanes, shift traffic, pave the permanent roadway and finish the median, paths, sidewalks, signals and markings.
The project’s expected completion remains spring 2028. Johns Creek has not announced a change to that date, so the overall job remains on its published schedule. A full closure in July to replace a 72-inch storm pipe was completed ahead of its planned end date, but the larger widening project is still measured in years, not months.
Drivers should continue to expect intermittent weekday delays and lane control as the construction zone moves along the corridor. The current work near Christopher Robin Road is a clear sign that the project has moved beyond clearing and into the heavier infrastructure work that will shape the new road.
The future western phase, from Douglas Road toward Ronald Reagan Boulevard and Union Hill Road, is separate from the construction underway now and will require additional funding.
