McGinnis Ferry Road Is Closed Through Sunday. Here’s the Detour
McGinnis Ferry Road remains fully closed through Sunday for storm pipe replacement, impacting traffic near Sargent Road and Jones Bridge Road. Detours direct drivers around the closure, affecting access and commute times in the area.

Major local stories and useful updates, once a week.
McGinnis Ferry Road will remain closed around the clock through Sunday, July 26, weather permitting. The closure extends from the Sargent Road/Seven Oaks Parkway intersection to the Jones Bridge Road/Brookwood Road intersection, near the Johns Creek–Forsyth County line.
The immediate work is taking place between Sargent Road and Fawn Lake Drive, where crews are replacing a 72-inch storm pipe as part of the larger McGinnis Ferry Road widening project. The pipe’s size and position beneath the existing roadway require a full closure rather than the temporary lane restrictions drivers have encountered elsewhere along the corridor.
The closure began Monday, July 20, and applies 24 hours a day. Drivers cannot pass through the construction area overnight or during periods when crews are not visibly working.
The Detour Around the Closure
Through traffic is being redirected south of McGinnis Ferry Road using Sargent Road and Jones Bridge Road. Drivers can follow Sargent Road to Jones Bridge Road and return to McGinnis Ferry at the Jones Bridge/Brookwood intersection. The route works in reverse for traffic traveling west.
A longer alternative uses Peachtree Parkway, Sargent Road and Brookwood Road. That route may be more practical for drivers traveling to businesses, medical offices or neighborhoods closer to the eastern end of the closure. Signs have been placed along the corridor directing traffic around the work zone.
The detours are likely to add traffic to roads that are already busy during the morning and evening commute. Drivers traveling between South Forsyth, Johns Creek and Peachtree Parkway should allow extra time, particularly near the Sargent Road and Jones Bridge Road intersections.
Access to properties outside the active construction area will remain available, but some residents will need to approach their neighborhoods from a different direction. Deer Lake residents cannot use the subdivision entrance at Fawn Lake Drive and McGinnis Ferry Road during the closure and should use another neighborhood entrance.
Hospital-route signs have also been installed for drivers traveling to Emory Johns Creek Hospital. Anyone with a medical appointment should avoid relying on McGinnis Ferry as a direct route through the closed section.

Part of a Much Larger Widening Project
The pipe replacement is one piece of a three-year reconstruction of McGinnis Ferry Road between Douglas Road and Hospital Parkway. The approximately 2.5-mile first phase will widen the corridor from two lanes to four, separated by a raised median.
The project also includes new drainage infrastructure, water lines, traffic signals, sidewalks and a multiuse path. The north side is planned with a 10-foot path, while the south side will receive a five-foot sidewalk. The work is intended to improve access to Emory Johns Creek Hospital and connect surrounding neighborhoods with the Big Creek Greenway system.
Phase I carries approximately $44 million in public funding, including $20 million from the Georgia Department of Transportation, $14.4 million from Forsyth County, $8.1 million from Johns Creek and $1.5 million from Fulton County Water and Sewer. Construction is expected to continue into 2028.
Although temporary lane closures have become familiar along McGinnis Ferry, this week’s shutdown represents a more significant interruption. The road functions as both a county boundary and a daily connection among Johns Creek, South Forsyth, Alpharetta and the Peachtree Parkway corridor.
The current closure is scheduled to end after Sunday, July 26, but the timetable remains dependent on weather and construction conditions. Drivers should continue following posted detours until the barricades are removed.
