North Fulton School Closures Could Take Effect No Earlier Than August 2028

Fulton County Schools’ North Fulton review may start attendance-boundary changes in 2027 with potential closures in 2028. Community forums are planned to discuss options. No decisions have been made yet.

Any school closure resulting from Fulton County Schools’ North Fulton review could take effect no earlier than August 2028, while attendance-boundary changes could begin a year sooner.

The distinction gives families a clearer timeline as the district begins community forums on how to address declining enrollment and underused school space. No closure or consolidation has been decided, and implementation dates remain unfinalized.

Anne Hampson Boatwright, Fulton’s media relations manager, confirmed the earliest possible dates in an Oct. 7 response to North Atlanta Star. The school board is expected to review proposals for Regions A and C in January 2027, with a final vote in February.

For North Fulton families, that means a reassignment to another school could potentially happen in August 2027 even though a campus closure could not take effect until August 2028.

The clarification follows the board’s September authorization of the capacity review, which began the planning process without approving new boundaries or closing a school.

Some students could request to stay

Existing district policy provides a possible option for students nearing the end of their time at a school.

Boatwright said students who move into a different attendance zone, either through a family move or redistricting, during the spring semester or summer before fifth, eighth, 11th or 12th grade may request to remain at their current school through its final grade.

That provision allows a request, not automatic approval. It also does not establish that a student could remain at a campus selected for closure.

The district’s response did not resolve how sibling assignments or transportation would work under a future plan. Those details remain important for families who could otherwise face different school schedules or additional travel.

First forum is Wednesday evening

The first North Fulton middle school forum runs Wednesday, Oct. 7, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Centennial High School gym, 9310 Scott Road in Roswell. The elementary school process begins Oct. 13, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., in the Roswell High School gym, 11595 King Road.

Families should not expect proposed boundary maps at these opening meetings. Staff will explain enrollment forecasts, population trends and the criteria used to draw attendance zones, followed by small-group discussions. That feedback will help shape the first proposals.

The community forum schedule calls for draft elementary maps on Nov. 9 and middle school maps on Nov. 11. Revised proposals follow on Dec. 14 and Dec. 15, respectively. resources.finalsite.net

The current North Fulton review includes Esther Jackson, Hembree Springs, Mimosa and Vickery Mill elementary schools, along with Autrey Mill, Elkins Pointe, Haynes Bridge and Holcomb Bridge middle schools. Inclusion in the review does not mean a school has been selected for closure.

For parents, the immediate opportunity is to raise concerns before the maps are drawn. The district’s planning criteria include distance, instructional capacity and projected enrollment, with traffic patterns, previous rezoning and school feeder alignment also considered. Concrete information about bus travel, neighborhood access and recent reassignments can help families explain how a proposed change would affect daily life.

Keep it. Pass it on.
