What North Atlanta Should Know Today. Sunday, Aug. 23, 2026
Alpharetta City Council will hold a hearing on a sweeping North Point Mall redevelopment. Metro Atlanta reports a new measles case without a known source. Local updates include Forsyth zoning, new jobs in Suwanee, and a lunar eclipse visible Thursday night.

Major local stories and useful updates, once a week.
Alpharetta’s most consequential development hearing in years leads Sunday’s briefing. A new metro measles case carries a practical health warning, major decisions are approaching in South Forsyth, and a nearly total lunar eclipse arrives Thursday night.
1. North Point arena proposal reaches Alpharetta City Council
Alpharetta City Council holds its public hearing Monday at 6:30 p.m. on the plan to redevelop approximately 99 acres at North Point Mall.
The proposal centers on a 20,000-seat, NHL-ready arena. It also includes a 2,000-seat community hockey rink, a 4,000-seat music hall, 1,385 rental apartments, 750,000 square feet of offices and two hotels totaling 700 rooms.
The Planning Commission voted 4-3 on Aug. 6 to recommend approval, signaling both support and unresolved concerns. Monday’s hearing is the project’s first formal appearance before the council; a final decision is not guaranteed that night. Proposal and hearing details and Alpharetta’s public-hearing portal.
2. Metro Atlanta’s latest measles case has no known source
Georgia health officials have confirmed measles in an unvaccinated metro Atlanta resident. The state had identified no travel history or known exposure as of Aug. 18 and was tracing people who may have encountered the patient while infectious.
This is Georgia’s seventh confirmed measles case of 2026 and the fourth reported in metro Atlanta. No public exposure locations have been announced.
Symptoms generally begin seven to 14 days after exposure and can include fever, cough, runny nose, watery eyes and a spreading rash. Anyone with possible symptoms should call a health-care provider before entering an office, hospital or clinic. Georgia Department of Public Health advisory.
3. Alpharetta gym case moves into adult court
A 15-year-old has been charged as an adult with aggravated sodomy and aggravated sexual battery following an alleged April 23 encounter at Life Time Fitness on North Point Parkway.
Alpharetta police confirmed the teenager was arrested Aug. 17. Fulton court records cited in the report show the case will proceed through Superior Court, with pretrial proceedings expected in September.
The charges are allegations, not convictions. The teenager’s family has publicly denied the accusations. Because both people involved are minors, restraint is warranted despite the case’s connection to public figures. FOX 5 report based on police and court records.
4. More public-assistance services move closer to North Fulton
Fulton commissioners have formalized the relocation of Medicaid and state credentialing services to the county’s Health & Human Services–North campus at 4700 North Point Parkway in Alpharetta.
The $25 million facility already consolidates public-health clinics, behavioral-health programs, senior services, vital records, WIC, children’s dental care and other assistance. The additional relocation further reduces the need for North Fulton residents to travel to Sandy Springs or downtown Atlanta for county services.
Before visiting, residents should confirm that the specific program they need is offered at the campus and whether an appointment is required. Aug. 19 action and relocation report and official facility overview.
5. Pilgrim Mill commercial proposal faces a Forsyth hearing
Forsyth County’s Planning Commission meets Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. with several zoning applications on its docket.
The strongest local case involves 1725 Pilgrim Mill Road near Cumming, where Two Mile Property LLC wants to rezone lake-residential property for commercial use. The application seeks eight variances, including reduced buffers and setbacks, less common space and permission to use an on-site septic system despite the county’s sewer-distance requirement.
The commission will make a recommendation rather than the final decision. Official legal notice and complete case list.
6. Technology Parkway construction continues in Peachtree Corners
The Technology Parkway reconfiguration is moving through demolition, grading and median work before crews progress to sidewalks, landscaping, paving and final striping.
The city says weekday construction may run from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Lane closures are limited to 9 a.m. through 4 p.m., with at least 48 hours’ notice, and businesses are supposed to remain accessible.
Drivers should expect changing traffic patterns around one of Peachtree Corners’ busiest employment corridors. Peachtree Corners construction notice.
7. Two local senior communities are part of a $147 million sale

Brickmont at Johns Creek in Cumming and Brickmont at Roswell in Alpharetta are included in a $147 million sale of five assisted-living and memory-care properties north of Atlanta.
The portfolio contains 611 units and 701 beds. An institutional investor bought it from a joint venture involving Centric Development and Sage Equities, while Claiborne Senior Living was retained to operate the communities.
That continuity should limit immediate disruption, but residents and families will want to watch for any later changes to staffing, fees, programming or capital improvements. Transaction details.
8. Suwanee-area energy facility brings a promised 300 jobs
French electrical-equipment company Socomec has opened a facility at 2935 Shawnee Industrial Way in unincorporated Suwanee.
Economic-development officials say the company invested $10 million and expects to create 300 production and operations jobs. Socomec makes equipment used in electrical switching, power monitoring, conversion and energy storage.
The opening partly offsets a difficult local employment development: office-products distributor Essendant is closing its Suwanee facility and eliminating 192 jobs as its broader business winds down. Socomec opening details and Essendant closure report.
9. Thursday’s lunar eclipse will be nearly total
North Atlanta should have a clear view of a deep partial lunar eclipse Thursday night into early Friday, weather permitting.
The noticeable partial phase begins at 10:34 p.m. Thursday. Maximum eclipse arrives at approximately 12:13 a.m. Friday, when 96.3% of the moon’s disk will be inside Earth’s central shadow. The partial phase ends around 1:52 a.m.
No protective glasses are required for a lunar eclipse. Binoculars can improve the view, but the event will be visible with the naked eye from any reasonably open location. NASA’s eclipse timing and visualization.
10. Alpharetta closes August with two large food events
Grand Tasting Alpharetta runs from 6 to 10 p.m. Thursday at The Hotel at Avalon, featuring unlimited tastings from more than 25 restaurants, beverages and live music. The ticketed event is limited to guests 21 and older. Grand Tasting information.
Downtown, Food Truck Alley runs from 5 to 9 p.m. the same evening on Old Roswell Street. More than 10 trucks and live music are expected, with limited seating. Old Roswell Street and the adjacent parking lot close at 1 p.m., so visitors should use the nearby public decks. Food Truck Alley details.
