Friday Night Football Returns Across North Atlanta

High school football returns Friday night in North Atlanta. Teams like Milton, South Forsyth, and Alpharetta begin their seasons with both home and away games. West Forsyth will take part in the Corky Kell Classic at Georgia State. Fans should prepare for hot weather and follow school athletic pages for updates.

For much of North Atlanta, high-school football returns Friday night.

The first full Friday of the 2026 season brings home openers in Milton, South Forsyth and Cumming, along with road trips for Alpharetta, Johns Creek, Chattahoochee and North Forsyth. West Forsyth will begin under a larger spotlight, facing Houston County at Georgia State University as part of the Corky Kell Classic.

Most of Friday’s games are nonregion contests. That gives coaches an early look at new starters and rebuilt position groups before the results begin shaping region standings and playoff races.

Milton opens at home against North Cobb

Milton’s season begins with North Cobb visiting the Eagles on Friday. The opener comes before a demanding early schedule that sends Milton to Blessed Trinity on Aug. 28 and brings Cambridge to Milton on Sept. 4.

The North Fulton portion of the schedule becomes increasingly local later in the season. Milton will play Johns Creek, Alpharetta, Gainesville, Riverwood and Roswell as part of the Region 7-6A schedule. Milton’s official GHSA schedule.

Alpharetta begins on the road at Kennesaw Mountain, with kickoff listed for 7:30 p.m. The Raiders return for their home opener Aug. 28 against Denmark. Alpharetta-Kennesaw Mountain game information.

Johns Creek also travels Friday, making the short trip to play Northview. The Gladiators’ schedule later includes home games against Mountain View, Chattahoochee, Milton, Gainesville and Alpharetta.

Chattahoochee opens at West Hall in Oakwood. Roswell and Cambridge began their seasons earlier through Corky Kell Classic games, while Centennial and Blessed Trinity are scheduled to play showcase games Thursday.

Forsyth begins with four home games

The opening-night map is unusually favorable to Forsyth County spectators.

Denmark hosts Sequoyah, Forsyth Central welcomes Creekview and Lambert opens against Peachtree Ridge. West Forsyth’s game against Houston County is officially listed as a home contest, although it will be played at Georgia State in Atlanta.

The Lambert-Peachtree Ridge game is one of two Friday matchups connecting Forsyth and Gwinnett. The other sends South Forsyth to Duluth, with kickoff listed for 7 p.m.

North Forsyth has the county’s longest opening-night trip, traveling to Jackson County. The Raiders return home Aug. 28 to face Archer.

Forsyth’s six large public-school programs will again compete together in Region 6-7A, creating a compact region schedule filled with familiar opponents. The first intraregion game arrives Sept. 24, when South Forsyth visits Lambert and West Forsyth travels to North Forsyth. Denmark plays at Forsyth Central the same night.

Until then, the opening games offer each team a chance to establish itself against opponents from outside the county.

West Forsyth receives the showcase stage

West Forsyth’s meeting with Houston County is scheduled for 8 p.m. Friday at Georgia State as part of the Corky Kell Classic.

The neutral-site setting separates the Wolverines from the traditional opening-night routine of campus parking, marching bands and packed student sections. It also places the team in one of Georgia’s most visible early-season events.

West Forsyth returns to Cumming for its first campus game Aug. 28 against Norcross. Its region schedule begins Sept. 24 at North Forsyth.

Heat remains part of opening-night planning

Friday’s games arrive during another stretch of hot, humid weather. The current forecast calls for temperatures around 90 during the afternoon, with only gradual cooling around kickoff and a possibility of an isolated storm. Families should check the forecast and school announcements again Friday, particularly if lightning or excessive heat could affect starting times.

The Georgia High School Association requires schools to measure Wet Bulb Globe Temperature during practices. For games, additional precautions apply at elevated readings, including mandatory hydration breaks when the kickoff reading reaches the GHSA threshold.

That makes water important not only for players. Spectators, band members, cheerleaders and stadium workers may spend several hours outside, often beginning well before kickoff. National Weather Service forecast center and GHSA heat-and-humidity policy.
