FedEx Plans $54.5 Million Expansion Near Houston, With 300 Jobs

FedEx is expanding its Cypress operations with a $54.5 million processing center designed for larger shipments. The project will add 300 jobs and is slated to open by summer 2028.

FedEx plans to expand its Cypress operations with a $54.5 million processing center designed for bulky shipments, adding a new building along the Grand Parkway in northwest Harris County.

The company intends to add 300 jobs through the expansion, according to the Houston Chronicle, which obtained confirmation from FedEx. Expanded operations are expected to begin in summer 2028.

A state construction filing registered Oct. 14 describes a 220,466-square-foot building at 9191 W. Grand Parkway N. in Cypress. The project would expand an established FedEx presence in the Houston-area community.

A Building for Packages That Need Different Handling

The filing identifies the proposed facility as a “non-conveyable processing center,” a shipping-industry term for an operation handling packages that cannot travel through conventional sorting equipment.

Large or unusually shaped shipments can require different handling from the smaller boxes moving along automated conveyor belts. Examples include furniture, tires, long packages and other bulky merchandise.

FedEx has previously described dedicated non-conveyable facilities as part of its response to demand for larger, heavier packages that will not fit on standard sorting equipment.

For customers, that specialized capacity supports the movement of purchases that are more difficult to sort and transport than a typical parcel.

FedEx told the Chronicle that the Cypress expansion would help serve the Houston region, including growing demand for larger shipments moving through nearby ports.

Construction Planned for January 2027

The state filing lists a proposed construction start of Jan. 19, 2027, and completion of Feb. 23, 2028. Those construction dates precede the company’s expected summer 2028 operational start.

Plans call for a single-story building with an automatic sprinkler system. FedEx Ground Package System Inc. is listed as the owner, and Nashville-based MJM Architects is identified as the design firm. The project is privately funded.

FedEx already operates a major distribution hub nearby at 8787 W. Grand Parkway N. The new processing center would add a dedicated building for specialized shipments to a corridor where the company has made repeated investments in sorting equipment and other improvements.

The 300 positions are planned additions associated with the future expansion. Job categories, pay rates and a recruiting timetable were not specified in the Chronicle’s report. Readers following employment opportunities can check the company’s official careers portal as the project advances.

Keep it. Pass it on.
