Hyundai Says Georgia Metaplant Hiring Goal Holds as Hybrid Production Expands

Hyundai says its growing push into hybrid vehicles is not reducing the production or employment targets attached to its massive Georgia manufacturing complex.

Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America told North Atlanta Star that approximately 2,200 people have now been hired directly by HMGMA, while employment among all eight companies operating at the Bryan County site has reached 4,420.

That puts the complex at 52% of its goal of creating 8,500 jobs by 2031, according to the company.

The update comes as Hyundai broadens the original electric-vehicle-focused plant into a more flexible manufacturing operation capable of producing EVs and hybrids as consumer demand changes.

Hybrids do not change the 500,000-vehicle target

Hyundai said the addition of hybrid vehicles has not changed its long-term production goal.

“Once we are up to full production, HMGMA will produce approximately 500,000 vehicles and a model mix of up to 10 vehicles,” the company told North Atlanta Star.

Hyundai declined to disclose how much of that production will eventually consist of hybrids.

The plant began producing the Kia Sportage Hybrid this year, its first Kia model and first hybrid vehicle. It is produced alongside the Hyundai IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 9. HMGMA says the factory was designed to accommodate as many as 10 different models.

Flexibility is becoming central to Hyundai’s Georgia strategy

HMGMA said the ability to build different brands and powertrains on the same manufacturing system has become one of the plant’s biggest advantages.

The company said that flexibility allows it to change production schedules, introduce additional models and respond more quickly when consumer demand shifts.

“When the company made the decision to add in hybrid capabilities, the facility’s design and technology gave us the ability to add those hybrid capabilities much easier than a traditional manufacturing facility,” HMGMA told North Atlanta Star.

That flexibility has become increasingly important as Hyundai expands its hybrid lineup.

At its 2026 investor presentation, Hyundai said it plans to offer more than 10 hybrid models in North America by 2030 and expects hybrids to reach roughly half of its North American sales mix. Those vehicles are expected to be produced in both Georgia and Alabama.

Hiring continues as the plant ramps up

Hyundai’s latest numbers also provide a clearer picture of how quickly employment is building around the Metaplant.

HMGMA itself has approximately 2,200 workers, known internally as “Meta Pros.” Including the seven other employers operating at the site, total employment has reached 4,420.

Hyundai says the full site remains on track for 8,500 jobs by 2031.

The Metaplant represents more than $7.5 billion in investment, while suppliers connected to the project have announced thousands of additional jobs elsewhere in Georgia.

Hyundai is not yet saying which models will come next.

Asked about additional production or hiring milestones expected this year, the company offered one indication that further announcements are coming: “Stay tuned.”
