Sunset, Stories and an Island After Dark: A Captain’s Lake Lanier Tour

Experience a unique Lake Lanier outing combining a sunset boat cruise with storytelling and a ghostly island visit. The tour blends history, folklore, and paranormal tales for an immersive evening.

For Captain Tom Stepnowski, the change comes as daylight fades over Lake Lanier. Passengers have had time to watch the shoreline from the upper deck. Then the tour moves into the cabin, and the stories begin.

“That transition from golden hour into blue hour is the moment when the history feels closest and guests become fully immersed,” Stepnowski told North Atlanta Star in written answers.

Stepnowski, owner of Lanier Boat Charter, leads the Haunted Lake Lanier Experience, a two-hour outing that combines a sunset cruise, storytelling and an after-dark stop on an uninhabited island. The company has added dates for October and says outings are offered Thursday through Sunday through the end of November.

The captain behind the stories

Stepnowski said his interest in the lake’s past began before he operated charters. He spent more than a decade researching its construction, the displacement of residents and the tragedies that contributed to its reputation.

Over time, he said, people began bringing him their own accounts. Those conversations included longtime residents, historians and people interested in paranormal investigations.

He said the challenge in presenting that material is distinguishing documented events from stories that have been repeated around the lake.

His historical research draws on historical societies, state records, Army Corps archives and newspaper reporting, he said. Local legends are introduced as folklore, while accounts of paranormal encounters are attributed to the people reporting them.

“My role isn’t to convince anyone; it’s to present the facts, acknowledge the folklore, and let guests interpret their own experience,” he said.

The outing is also designed as entertainment. Its published description acknowledges that performance techniques are used to build suspense and fear alongside the historical material.

From the upper deck to an island

The cruise takes place aboard The Experience, a 50-passenger vessel with a climate-controlled cabin.

According to Stepnowski, passengers spend the first 20 to 30 minutes enjoying the view from the upper deck before moving downstairs for a presentation that combines history, legends, media and audience participation.

The Haunted Lake Lanier Experience includes an after-dark stop on an uninhabited island, where guests can explore the shoreline with flashlights.

The boat then stops at an island, where guests can explore with flashlights and equipment marketed for paranormal investigations, including electromagnetic-field meters and audio recorders. Accounts of paranormal activity are part of the tour’s storytelling; they have not been independently verified by North Atlanta Star.

After the island visit, passengers return aboard for fire pits, marshmallows and conversation about the outing, Stepnowski said.

For the captain, the contrast between the lake’s appearance and its reputation remains central to the experience. The same water that draws visitors for its scenery also brings people curious about the stories attached to it.
