Just a few doors from D1 Training on Peachtree Parkway, a South Forsyth dance school is preparing for a role connected to one of metro Atlanta’s largest Indian entertainment events this summer.
Shiv’s Institute of Dance, better known locally as SID Bollywood, is serving as an official dance-school training partner for “Prabhu Deva Live in Atlanta,” coming to Gas South Arena in Duluth on Sunday, Aug. 2.
The partnership connects a familiar studio near Target, Walmart and GA 141 with Prabhu Deva, one of Indian cinema’s most celebrated dancers and choreographers. His career has crossed Bollywood and the Tamil and Telugu film industries, combining dance, acting, choreography and directing.
A South Forsyth Studio With a Wider Reach
SID was founded in 2008 by Shiva Turlapati, an Indian-born choreographer whose career includes film, stage and large-scale entertainment productions. Before establishing the school in metro Atlanta, he worked as a lead choreographer at Ramoji Film City in India.
The Peachtree Parkway location occupies three adjoining suites at 2569 Peachtree Parkway. Its classes cover Bollywood, hip-hop, contemporary and freestyle dance, with programs for children, teenagers and adults. Training extends beyond learning a routine, with attention to coordination, expressions, formations, musical timing and the confidence required to perform before an audience.
The school has also grown well beyond South Forsyth. SID now holds classes in Alpharetta, Duluth, Marietta, Woodstock and the Bethelview area of Cumming, as well as Concord, North Carolina. That expansion mirrors the increasing visibility of Indian music, dance and cultural events across North Atlanta’s suburbs.
A Major Dance Event in Duluth
Prabhu Deva’s Atlanta appearance is being presented as a live dance and entertainment production at Gas South Arena rather than a conventional music concert. SID’s participation as a training partner places a locally founded school within the preparation surrounding the event.
For South Forsyth residents, the connection is a reminder that an ordinary-looking suburban shopping center can contain institutions with a reach far beyond the surrounding storefronts. In this case, a dance studio along the daily Peachtree Parkway shopping route has become part of a production centered on one of Indian entertainment’s most recognizable performers.
“Prabhu Deva Live in Atlanta” begins at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 2, with doors opening at 4:30 p.m. Tickets currently start at $65.81. The arena is located at 6400 Sugarloaf Parkway in Duluth. Event and ticket information is available through Gas South District.
More information about SID’s classes and locations is available at the Shiv’s Institute of Dance website.
