Holiday traffic, school schedules and a full weekend calendar lead North Atlanta into Labor Day. MARTA is adding service for major downtown events, Fulton County begins offering free Friday wedding ceremonies again, and several local programs get underway tonight.
1. Labor Day traffic begins building at noon
Georgia DOT will suspend most interstate lane closures at noon today through 5 a.m. Tuesday to make room for Labor Day travel.
The busiest periods are expected from noon to 8 p.m. today and noon to 6 p.m. Saturday. GA 400, Interstate 85 and the routes leading toward the airport are likely to feel the holiday rush first.

2. MARTA adds service for Saturday’s major downtown events
North Fulton riders heading downtown for Dragon Con, the Dragon Con parade or Saturday’s Auburn-Baylor game will find added MARTA rail service.
Saturday trains will begin around 5 a.m. and run every 12 minutes until 3 p.m.; the Red Line will operate between North Springs and the airport throughout the day. MARTA will also run Saturday schedules on Labor Day itself.

3. Forsyth students have an early release today; all three districts close Monday
Forsyth County Schools dismiss all K-12 students early today ahead of the holiday weekend.
Fulton County Schools, Forsyth County Schools and Gwinnett County Public Schools will all be closed Monday, Sept. 7, for Labor Day. Families relying on school meals, office services or after-school activities should confirm any separate holiday arrangements before the weekend begins. 4. Fulton County’s free Friday wedding program begins today
Fulton County Probate Court resumes its “Forever Fridays” wedding ceremonies at 3 p.m. today at the South Service Center in College Park.
There is no ceremony fee or appointment requirement, but couples must already have a valid Fulton County marriage license and may bring no more than two guests. Today’s relaunch includes music, photography, cupcakes, a performance and a surprise guest officiant.

5. Forsyth County explains its data-center rules after a permit reversal
Forsyth County has released a new public explanation of its data-center ordinance, as communities across Georgia wrestle with proposals for large, power-intensive facilities.
The county says the ordinance governs where data centers may locate and addresses utility concerns. Its new FAQ also notes that a previously approved conditional-use permit was revoked this summer.

6. Gwinnett begins public discussion of railroad-crossing changes
Gwinnett County will hold three September open houses on proposed safety changes at railroad crossings on Hosea Road, Oak Road/Gloster Road and Arcado Road.
The sessions begin Sept. 21 and continue through Sept. 29. They will present the results of county safety studies and give residents, businesses and property owners a chance to weigh in before projects move forward.
The crossings are outside the immediate North Gwinnett area, but the process could shape how the county approaches safety and traffic conflicts at other rail corridors. Gwinnett’s meeting schedule and project information.
7. Peachtree Corners starts the weekend with Friday Night Live
Friday Night Live returns to Peachtree Corners Town Center at 6 p.m. today with music from local performers.

8. Sugar Hill has baseball and theater on the same night
Sugar Hill’s rescheduled Community Night with the Gwinnett Stripers begins at 7:05 tonight at Gwinnett Field, where the Stripers face the Charlotte Knights.

9. Play It Again Sports continues its opening celebration in Forsyth
Play It Again Sports opened Thursday at 580 Atlanta Road in Forsyth County and continues its grand-opening celebration through Sunday.
The store sells new and used sporting goods and accepts eligible equipment for resale or store credit. For families with children beginning fall sports—or replacing equipment after a summer growth spurt—the opening brings another lower-cost option close to home. Store information and hours.
10. Alpharetta Arts Center opens the holiday weekend with Hispanic artists’ exhibition
“Voces del Corazón—Art from the Soul” is open today at the Alpharetta Arts Center.
The juried exhibition features work rooted in Hispanic artists’ memories, stories and perspectives. It gives the city a quiet cultural alternative to the larger holiday-weekend events and is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. today. Exhibition information.
