Major local stories and useful updates, once a week.
New school-boundary options, weekend ballot returns and Sunday’s health-insurance enrollment opening lead today’s news, alongside an Alpharetta race, roadwork notices and Friday night’s football results.
1. DeKalb’s new school-boundary options put major changes before families
Families in Brookhaven, Chamblee and Dunwoody have new attendance-zone proposals to consider as DeKalb County Schools works to relieve overcrowding. Four options address the Cross Keys area: one would leave it without a dedicated middle school, while three would convert Woodward, John Lewis or Dresden elementary school into a middle school. No final decision has been made.
The district’s school-options locator and survey let families compare assignments by address and submit feedback through November 10. A public-comment session for the Chamblee, Dunwoody and Cross Keys clusters runs from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, November 5, at Dunwoody High School. Advance registration to speak has closed, but residents may still attend.
2. Gwinnett will accept absentee ballots this weekend, but early voting is over
Gwinnett voters with completed absentee ballots can hand-deliver them to the county elections office at the Beauty P. Baldwin Building in Lawrenceville from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and Sunday, November 1. The deadline for the county to receive completed ballots is 7 p.m. Tuesday, November 3.
There is no in-person voting Monday, November 2. Tuesday’s voters must use their assigned precinct between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.; the elections headquarters will not serve as an Election Day polling place. Check Gwinnett’s weekend ballot-return notice and confirm your precinct through Georgia’s My Voter Page before making the trip.
3. Shopping for 2027 health insurance begins Sunday
Open enrollment through Georgia Access begins November 1 for residents buying individual or family health coverage. December 15 is the deadline to choose a plan that starts January 1, 2027. The enrollment period continues through January 15, with later selections starting February 1.
Returning customers should review renewal notices rather than assume their current coverage will carry forward unchanged. Georgia Access generally automatically re-enrolls customers, but anyone whose insurer is leaving their area must choose another plan. The marketplace’s renewal guide explains how to update an application, compare coverage and submit required documents.
4. Sunday’s sold-out Alpharetta race brings an early start around Avalon
The Alpharetta Women’s Half Marathon and 5K takes place Sunday, November 1, with races starting at 7 a.m. Registration is sold out. Participants should be parked and ready at the starting line by 6:45 a.m.; Avalon’s parking lots open at 5 a.m.
The 2026 athlete guide identifies parking access from Old Milton Parkway and Westside Parkway. Whole Foods and Avalon residential parking areas are off-limits to runners, with towing or fines possible. Residents and visitors making an early Sunday trip around Avalon should allow extra time for race activity and follow traffic-control directions.
5. Buford woman convicted in a computer-support scam targeting seniors
A jury has convicted a Buford woman of racketeering in a scheme that took as much as $1 million from dozens of victims. Fataoumata Keita, 48, is scheduled for sentencing in December, the Gwinnett County district attorney’s office announced October 30.
The operation used computer pop-ups claiming a device had a virus and directing users to call a telephone number. People posing as support representatives then sold unnecessary software or assistance and instructed victims to mail checks to a Buford post-office box. Some checks exceeded $1,500, prosecutors said.
6. Driver cited after pedestrian struck in downtown Cumming
A pedestrian crossing near the Forsyth County Jail was struck by a car Friday morning, October 30. The driver was cited for failing to yield in the crosswalk, Forsyth County News reported.
With families walking through neighborhoods for Halloween tonight, drivers should approach crossings slowly and watch for pedestrians entering the roadway after dark.
7. Two Hopewell Road roundabouts face delays Thursday
Milton drivers should plan for slowdowns November 5 at the Hopewell Road intersections with Thompson Road and Bethany Bend. Contractors will stain new stamped concrete to match the existing surfaces, starting at Hopewell–Thompson around 9 a.m. before moving to Hopewell–Bethany Bend.
Full road closures are not expected, and work should finish by approximately 4 p.m., as detailed in the work notice. Drivers using Hopewell Road during the school and afternoon travel periods should leave extra time.
8. Ocee’s playground upgrade removes a barrier for students with mobility needs
Ocee Elementary in Johns Creek has replaced mulch on its special-needs playground with a rubberized surface, making it easier for students using wheelchairs, walkers and other mobility supports to reach play equipment. Woodland Elementary in Sandy Springs received the same improvement through a 2026 state grant.
Asa G. Hilliard and Heritage elementary schools were also included in the four-campus project. The work uses recycled-tire material through Georgia’s Tire Product Grant program, replacing uneven mulch with a surface that gives students more independent access to outdoor play.
9. Halcyon’s Eclipse di Luna passes its follow-up inspection
Eclipse di Luna at Halcyon has passed a reinspection after failing a routine health inspection earlier this month. The follow-up came a week after the unsuccessful inspection, Forsyth County News reported October 29.
10. Denmark wins a close one; Lambert and West Forsyth also finish Friday with victories
Denmark defeated North Forsyth 32–27 on October 30, improving to 6–3 overall. West Forsyth edged South Forsyth 22–21, while Lambert beat Forsyth Central 38–6.
The final regular-season week brings Denmark against West Forsyth on November 6, Lambert against North Forsyth, and South Forsyth against Forsyth Central. GHSA’s official schedules and scores have the results and remaining matchups as the teams head toward the postseason.
