ALPHARETTA, Ga. — A new round of hiring at Caterpillar is bringing several unusually varied jobs to Alpharetta, ranging from hands-on facilities work paying up to $33.80 an hour to a sales-engineering position with a salary range reaching $192,710.
Unlike broad economic-development announcements that promise jobs months or years into the future, these are positions people can apply for now.
Two of the newest openings were posted Thursday and Friday, Aug. 13 and 14, and Caterpillar has set application deadlines between Aug. 19 and Aug. 23 for several of the positions.
The jobs are concentrated in Caterpillar’s Electric Power Division, which develops power systems for hospitals, municipalities, data centers and other commercial and industrial customers.
Here are some of the openings currently available:
| Position | Alpharetta status | Advertised pay | Apply by |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fulfillment Manager — Electric Power | Alpharetta | $81,370–$122,060 | Aug. 23 |
| Facilities Maintenance Team Lead — Electric Power | Alpharetta | $26–$33.80/hour | Aug. 23 |
| Sales Engineer | Alpharetta is primary location | $128,470–$192,710 | Aug. 21 |
| Senior Permitting & Regulatory Manager | Alpharetta available as secondary location | $159,120–$238,680 | Aug. 19 |
The newest of the group is a fulfillment manager position posted Aug. 14. The job focuses on material flow, warehousing, inventory management and factory operations and requires a bachelor’s degree in supply-chain management, business administration or a related field. Caterpillar lists a salary range of $81,370 to $122,060 and says the employee will work in the office five days a week.
A facilities maintenance team lead opening provides a different path into the operation. That position pays $26 to $33.80 an hour and calls for experience in facility or industrial maintenance, building systems or a related technical field. The work includes HVAC, electrical, plumbing and mechanical systems as well as coordinating contractors and maintenance projects.
Caterpillar posted that job Aug. 13 and is accepting applications through Aug. 23. Relocation assistance and visa sponsorship are not available.
At the higher end is a sales engineer position for Caterpillar’s Electric Power Division. Alpharetta is the primary location, although several other Caterpillar locations are also eligible. The advertised range is $128,470 to $192,710.
The job combines technical knowledge and sales, with particular emphasis on switchgear, controls and complex power projects. Caterpillar says candidates should expect up to 35% travel and a five-day-a-week office schedule. Applications are scheduled to remain open through Aug. 21.
There is also a senior permitting and regulatory manager opening with a salary range of $159,120 to $238,680. Alpharetta is one of the permitted locations, although Caterpillar identifies Irving, Texas, as the primary location. The position focuses on environmental permitting and emissions requirements for electric-power projects and closes Aug. 19.
The roles cross traditional categories. Caterpillar is looking not only for engineers and senior managers, but also for workers with facilities, warehouse, maintenance and material-management experience. Several are directly connected with the physical operation of an electric-power business rather than a conventional suburban corporate office.
That is notable at a time when the broader Atlanta-area labor market is growing slowly. Metro Atlanta had about 3.13 million nonfarm jobs in June, just 0.4% more than a year earlier. Manufacturing employment was down 1.3% over the year, while professional and business services employment was up only 0.5%.
The strongest growth remained in education and health services, which was up 4.7% from a year earlier.
