Gwinnett County is recruiting temporary poll officials for the Nov. 3 general election, offering paid roles to applicants as young as 16 and a hiring event Monday in Norcross.

The Election Poll Official posting is open continuously. Nearly 500 residents are recruited each election to supplement returning workers, although submitting an application does not guarantee an assignment. Vacancies are filled by elections staff and poll managers.

Pay depends on the position and required duties. Poll managers receive a $350 election stipend, $100 for online and in-person training, and as much as $50 for picking up and returning supplies, bringing the maximum to $500.

Assistant poll managers can receive as much as $405, while issuing clerks can receive up to $320. Non-issuing clerks receive a $170 stipend, $15 for online training and another $45 if in-person training is required. Separate Election Day and Election Night positions at the elections office pay stipends of $75 to $150.

The work requires a long day. Poll officials must arrive at their assigned location by 5:30 a.m. and typically finish between 9 and 10 p.m., after ballots, equipment and paperwork have been secured. Workers cannot leave after being sworn in except during an emergency, and the county does not provide meals.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens, proficient in English and able to lift between 15 and 50 pounds. They also need email, computer access for online training and reliable transportation.

Gwinnett residents are eligible, along with residents of neighboring counties including Fulton and Forsyth. Applicants from outside Gwinnett must obtain a poll-worker waiver from their home county before receiving an assignment. Poll managers and assistant managers must be registered Georgia voters.

The county particularly needs multilingual applicants, especially Spanish speakers. Residents are generally assigned near their home precinct when possible, creating opportunities to serve in communities including Duluth, Peachtree Corners, Sugar Hill and Suwanee.

The next poll-official hiring event is scheduled from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 5, at the Norcross Branch of the Gwinnett County Public Library, 5735 Buford Highway. Another event is set for Oct. 19 in Lawrenceville.

Election Day is Nov. 3. Workers planning to vote should do so before their assignment because they cannot leave the polling place during the day. Gwinnett’s election schedule sets advance voting for Oct. 13 through Oct. 30.

The position is temporary and does not include employee benefits. It may nevertheless offer high school students, retirees and residents seeking occasional income a short-term paid role with no college-degree requirement.

Keep it. Pass it on.
