A 45-acre park with an accessible playground, soccer fields and more than a mile of trails is scheduled to open in Lawrenceville next month.
Gwinnett County plans to cut the ribbon on Discovery Park in November, making it the county parks system’s 53rd park. The entrance is at 990 Monfort Road. A specific opening date was not included in the county’s October announcement.
The park will offer two small soccer fields designed for three-on-three games, outdoor basketball courts and a multipurpose field with a lighted walking track. The multipurpose field will be available for informal play when it is not reserved.
Families will also find a playground covered by shade sails, picnic pavilions, restrooms and a splash pad. The county lists 1.2 miles of multiuse trail among the park’s amenities.
Construction began in June 2024. At the groundbreaking, county officials put the project’s cost at $28.5 million, funded through the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, or SPLOST. Plans included a 12-foot-wide lighted trail around the park and a Ride Gwinnett bus stop.
Discovery Park could eventually become a starting point for longer walks and bike rides into Lawrenceville. The city’s proposed Redland Creek Greenway includes an initial 1.6-mile section from the park to Langley Drive, with later phases extending the network.
That project remains in planning and design. The greenway connection will not be part of the park’s November opening.
The county is also adding trail markers at Discovery Park to help visitors find their way and identify their location when seeking assistance. Similar signs are planned for George Pierce Park in Suwanee, DeShong Park and Beaver Ruin Wetland Park.
Once open, Discovery Park’s listed hours will be sunrise to 11 p.m., unless otherwise posted. Opening updates and rental information are available through the county’s Discovery Park page.
