Training for Louisiana’s new steel jobs can begin now, college says
Louisiana’s River Parishes Community College is accepting students in degree programs preparing for steel industry jobs before its Hyundai Training Center opens in 2028. The training covers Industrial Maintenance, Electrical and Process Technology.

Students hoping to prepare for Louisiana’s expanding steel industry can begin training now, more than a year before River Parishes Community College expects to open its Hyundai Training Center.
The college is already enrolling students in four degree programs aligned with its Steel Training Pathway, Landon Corbin, RPCC’s director of marketing and communications, told North Atlanta Star.
“Students do not have to wait for the center to open to begin preparing for careers in steel manufacturing,” Corbin said.
The pathway offers a practical next step for readers following the Hyundai-POSCO Louisiana steel mill project, though enrollment does not guarantee a job with the company.
Four programs available now
Students can pursue an Associate of Applied Science degree in Industrial Maintenance (Millwright), Electrical Technology, Instrumentation Technology or Process Technology.
All four programs are offered at RPCC’s existing campuses. They are designed as two-year pathways, although completion time depends on a student’s course load and progress.
The college is also developing training focused specifically on steelmaking, fabrication processes, and specialized electrical and mechanical maintenance. A Steelmaking Bootcamp and post-hire training are planned, but Corbin did not provide launch dates for those offerings.
Training center targeted for January 2028
Construction of the RPCC Hyundai Training Center is underway, with an anticipated opening in January 2028, subject to state and accreditor approvals.
That clarifies the timeline following a February groundbreaking announcement that targeted late 2027.
Students in eligible programs may qualify for existing financial aid and scholarships, Corbin said. His response did not include tuition figures, entry requirements or a commitment to paid or employer-funded training.
For now, prospective students can explore the four available degrees and follow updates through RPCC’s Steel Training Pathway.
