Nashville Moves to Name Its Airport for Dolly Parton

Nashville International Airport may soon carry the name of the woman whose voice, generosity and unmistakable sense of home helped make Tennessee known far beyond its borders.

Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee and Nashville International Airport announced last week that they intend to name BNA in honor of Dolly Parton, opening a conversation with her team about what would become one of the most visible tributes ever made to the singer, songwriter and philanthropist. The airport’s formal name has not yet changed, but the announcement gives real momentum to an idea that had already gathered extraordinary public support.

A Change.org petition calling for “Dolly Parton International Airport” had collected more than 171,000 verified signatures as of Monday, with supporters arguing that the airport is a fitting welcome to the state for a figure who became both a global entertainer and a deeply personal Tennessee presence.

Parton, who died Aug. 25 at 80, spent a lifetime making the state’s particular mix of ambition, humor, faith and generosity feel familiar to audiences everywhere. Her musical legacy alone would make the tribute understandable. But for many supporters, it is her work beyond the stage that makes the case feel especially strong.

Through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, she built a children’s-literacy program that has placed hundreds of millions of free books in the hands of young children and families. Her philanthropy reached well beyond Tennessee, while Dollywood turned her East Tennessee roots into a major family destination and economic engine.

The proposed airport name carries a rare kind of civic logic. Airports are usually named for presidents, politicians or geographic regions. Naming Nashville’s gateway for Parton would instead place a creative artist and philanthropist at the center of the city’s public identity. For arriving visitors, “Dolly Parton International Airport” would immediately say something about the kind of place Nashville believes itself to be: musical, welcoming, commercially ambitious and still attached to the idea that success should be shared.

There is also an unusually broad public affection behind the proposal. Parton’s life crossed generations and political lines without seeming to lose its warmth. She could be glamorous and funny, fiercely business-minded and deeply rooted in family. Her songs traveled the world, but she never stopped sounding like Tennessee.

For North Atlanta families who make the easy drive to Nashville for concerts, weekend trips, college visits or a stop on the way to the Smokies, the name would give a familiar regional journey a distinctly Southern landmark. It would also underline the growing cultural relationship among the South’s booming cities: Atlanta, Nashville, Charlotte and others increasingly connected by travel, business, music and family life.

There are still details to work through. The Metro Nashville Airport Authority would ultimately determine whether and how a renaming proceeds, and questions of branding, signage and implementation will follow. But after a week of mourning, the proposal has already become something larger than an airport-name debate.

It is a question of how Tennessee wants to greet the world — and whether there is any better ambassador waiting at the gate than Dolly Parton.
