Metro Atlanta, including the North Fulton and South Forsyth suburbs, is heading into a very warm and unstable Sunday afternoon with scattered thunderstorms expected to develop later today and continue into the evening.
The biggest concerns are strong wind gusts, lightning, isolated hail, and brief periods of heavy rain. The National Weather Service office in Peachtree City says several storms across North Georgia could become severe this afternoon and evening.
Temperatures are expected to climb into the upper 80s across the Atlanta area today, unusually warm for mid-May and close to record territory. The heat and humidity are helping fuel storm development, especially after about 2–3 p.m. into tonight.
Areas including Johns Creek, Alpharetta, Milton, Roswell, Cumming, Duluth, and Suwanee are all inside the broader Level 1 severe weather risk zone today. That is considered the lowest severe category, but it still means isolated damaging storms are possible.
One major backdrop to today’s weather is Georgia’s ongoing drought. Despite several recent rain systems, much of the state remains under significant drought conditions, especially after a warmer-than-normal spring. The National Weather Service says longer-range forecasts now point toward a wetter pattern during the second half of May, which could gradually improve conditions if rainfall totals materialize.
For local residents, the timing matters. Outdoor sports, graduations, parks, patios, and evening events across North Atlanta suburbs could all see interruptions later today. Storms are expected to remain scattered rather than an all-day washout, but any stronger cell could briefly turn intense.
The main window to watch appears to be late afternoon through late evening.
