When Is Fall Break in North Atlanta Schools? The Three Districts Chose Different Weeks
Fall break weeks vary in Fulton, Forsyth, and Gwinnett counties, with breaks spread over three different weeks. This affects family travel and childcare plans across North Atlanta.

Families planning fall travel or arranging child care will need to watch the county line this year. Fulton, Forsyth and Gwinnett schools have placed their fall breaks on three different weeks.
Fulton students are out Sept. 21–25. Forsyth’s break runs Sept. 28 through Oct. 2. Gwinnett waits until Oct. 12–16.
That creates nearly a month between the beginning of North Fulton’s break and the final day off in Gwinnett.

Fulton families get the earliest break. Students finish the week on Friday, Sept. 18, and do not return until Monday, Sept. 28. The break itself falls Sept. 21–23, and the following two days are set aside for staff work, leaving children home for the full week.
With the weekends on either side, Fulton students have nine days away from class. Families can keep the district’s 2026–27 calendar handy as September approaches.
Forsyth families follow one week later. Students are out Sept. 28 through Oct. 2 and return Monday, Oct. 5—another nine-day pause when the weekends are included.
The Forsyth County Schools calendar also includes an early-release day this Friday, Sept. 4, before the Labor Day weekend. All grade levels will dismiss early, and schools will remain closed Monday, Sept. 7.
Gwinnett’s fall break comes later, from Oct. 12 through Oct. 16. With the two weekends included, students will be away from class for nine consecutive days and return Oct. 19.
Gwinnett also has a Digital Learning Day on Friday, Sept. 18. Students will work from home that day, but it should not be treated as an ordinary school holiday. The district’s student calendar advises families to make sure children bring home their district-issued devices.
Why the difference can complicate family plans
The staggered calendar is most noticeable in households that cross district boundaries.
A parent may work for Fulton schools while a child attends school in Forsyth. Divorced or blended families may have children enrolled in different counties. Grandparents who provide child care may also be asked to cover separate weeks for grandchildren living only a short drive apart.
Youth sports, private schools, day-care centers and community programs do not necessarily follow any one district calendar. Families should check those schedules individually before booking travel or assuming that an activity will pause during the public-school break.
The different weeks can have an upside for travel. North Atlanta families will not all be competing for the same flights, hotel rooms and attractions at once. Fulton families leave first, followed by Forsyth and then Gwinnett.
Still, parents should use the dates from their own school district rather than rely on a neighbor’s schedule. In communities near county boundaries—including Johns Creek, Alpharetta, South Forsyth, Suwanee and Peachtree Corners—the closest school in another direction may follow an entirely different week.
The calendars come back together later
The three districts separate for fall break but align on several major holidays.
Fulton, Forsyth and Gwinnett students will all be out Nov. 23–27 for Thanksgiving. Their winter breaks begin Dec. 21, with students returning after the New Year. All three districts have also scheduled spring break for April 5–9, 2027.
Fall is the exception. North Fulton begins the break cycle Sept. 21, Forsyth follows Sept. 28 and Gwinnett does not begin until Oct. 12.
For families making plans now, the county matters as much as the month.
