North Atlanta Courthouse Wedding Price Check: A Legal Marriage Can Start at $16

A wedding ceremony can be free without being a bargain-basement affair.

Fulton County is bringing back its Friday courthouse weddings this week, offering couples a no-fee group ceremony without an appointment. But the marriage license is still required, and that is where the real minimum cost begins.

For couples who want to become legally married before planning a larger celebration—or skip the larger celebration altogether—the cheapest local option is a $16 marriage license after completing a qualifying premarital-education program.

Gwinnett also offers free Friday courthouse ceremonies, although couples must reserve a time in advance. Forsyth offers the same lower-cost license for couples who complete the required education, but does not have a standing weekly courthouse ceremony like the programs in Fulton and Gwinnett.

The figures cover the legal steps only. They do not include clothing, flowers, transportation, a meal, a photographer, a reception or a private officiant.

Fulton’s Friday ceremonies return Sept. 4

Fulton’s first returning Forever Fridays ceremony begins at 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4, at the South Service Center, 5600 Stonewall Tell Road in College Park. The opening event includes music, photographs, cupcakes and a guest officiant. Afterward, the program will continue with free Friday group ceremonies.

The ceremony itself costs nothing, but participants must bring a valid Fulton County marriage license. The Fulton Probate Court charges $68.50 for that license, including one mailed certified copy of the marriage certificate. Couples who arrive with proof that they completed a qualifying premarital-education program pay $28.50 instead.

Forever Fridays are limited to couples with Fulton-issued licenses. Each couple may bring up to two guests, and the court cautions that the ceremonies are public and may be photographed or shared on its social-media accounts. The court has married more than 5,000 couples through the program since 2023.

For North Fulton couples, that can mean applying for the license at the Probate Court’s North Service Center on Roswell Road in Sandy Springs, then traveling to College Park for the Friday ceremony. The Forever Fridays program is designed for a brief public ceremony, not a private courthouse wedding with a large guest list.

Gwinnett offers the lowest no-frills total

Gwinnett’s Probate Court has long offered free ceremonies on most Friday afternoons at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center in Lawrenceville.

Couples must reserve their date and complete the license process before the ceremony. The Gwinnett Probate Court charges $56 for a marriage license or $16 when both applicants complete a qualifying premarital-education program. The court does not charge an additional ceremony fee.

That leaves a prepared couple with a path to a legal wedding for $16, plus any card-processing charge and the cost of getting to Lawrenceville. Couples need a valid Georgia marriage license and government-issued photo identification, and should allow extra time for parking, security and check-in.

Forsyth couples can keep the license cost low, but need an officiant

Forsyth County’s marriage-license price is the same as Gwinnett’s: $56, or $16 with a qualifying premarital-education certificate. The Forsyth Probate Court fee schedule sets those rates.

A Forsyth license can be used anywhere in Georgia. That gives couples flexibility to marry at home, at a park, at a religious service or with a private officiant—but it also adds one cost that the Fulton and Gwinnett Friday programs remove.

A private officiant’s fee can range widely depending on travel, rehearsal time, personalization and whether the ceremony is held on a weekend. Couples seeking the least expensive route can ask a faith leader, friend who is legally able to solemnize a marriage, or an authorized local officiant about a simple weekday signing ceremony before committing to a larger package.

For most couples, the license is only a tiny part of the wedding budget. But for those who want the legal commitment first and the celebration later, Fulton and Gwinnett offer an unusually affordable way to begin: a courthouse ceremony, a witness or two, and a bill that can stay below the cost of dinner for two.
