Georgia’s Gas Tax Break Could Save About $5 on a 15-Gallon Fill-Up

North Atlanta drivers could save about $5 each time they buy 15 gallons of gasoline under a temporary state tax suspension beginning Tuesday, Sept. 29.

Gov. Brian Kemp ordered the fuel-tax break Monday as the Iran war continues to put pressure on fuel prices. The suspension removes Georgia’s 33.3-cent-per-gallon gasoline tax and 37.3-cent diesel tax, with relief scheduled to continue through Oct. 29.

The change comes as metro Atlanta’s average price for regular gasoline stands at about $4.24 a gallon, up from $3.80 a month ago and $2.89 a year ago, according to AAA’s latest fuel-price figures. Georgia’s statewide average was $4.19 on Monday.

What drivers could save

If the full gasoline tax reduction reaches customers, it would translate into approximately:

$3.30 on a 10-gallon purchase.

$5 on a 15-gallon purchase.

$6.60 on a 20-gallon purchase.

A household buying 60 gallons during the suspension would save about $20 from the gasoline tax reduction alone. A 20-gallon diesel purchase would carry about $7.46 less in state excise tax.

Those calculations assume retailers pass along the full reduction and that other fuel costs remain unchanged. They are not a guarantee that station prices will fall by precisely those amounts.

Prices may take several days to adjust

Drivers should not expect every station to cut its price immediately after the suspension begins. Georgia collects the excise tax at the distributor level, so fuel already purchased with the tax included can delay the change at the pump.

The break also offsets only part of the recent increase. At Monday’s metro Atlanta average, 15 gallons of regular gasoline cost about $63.53, roughly $20 more than a year earlier. A fully passed-through tax reduction would bring that purchase to about $58.54 if all other costs held steady.

For households making regular trips along Ga. 400, Peachtree Parkway and I-85, the savings could ease the weekly fuel bill. But oil prices and supply conditions will continue to influence what drivers actually pay.
