Caterpillar’s planned $1 billion manufacturing investment in North Carolina will expand production capacity without increasing its Sanford workforce, the company told North Atlanta Star.
Instead, existing employees will receive training to operate the new facility’s advanced manufacturing equipment, automation and digital systems.
“For the new facility, we do not expect to increase our workforce in Sanford,” Caterpillar spokesperson Lisa Miller said in an emailed response.
The clarification adds an important distinction to the company’s Sept. 30 announcement: the investment will increase manufacturing capacity, but Caterpillar does not currently expect it to bring additional jobs to Sanford.
Construction could begin late this year
The project remains in the planning phase. Subject to final approvals and project conditions, construction is expected to begin in late 2026, Miller said.
The facility is expected to start adding production capacity in 2028. It will help meet demand for compact track loaders and telehandlers, machines used to move materials and perform other tasks in construction, landscaping and agriculture.
New equipment and new skills
Miller said the existing workforce will be trained for a more technology-enabled manufacturing environment. Automation and digital capabilities are intended to improve safety, quality and efficiency while helping employees develop new expertise.
Caterpillar’s initial announcement cited its established Sanford operations, local workforce and manufacturing experience as reasons for choosing North Carolina.
For Sanford workers, the company’s current plan centers on training the people already employed there to support a larger, more automated production operation.
