The Freemanville Road bridge in Milton reopened ahead of schedule after nearly five months of replacement work. The new bridge includes one lane each way and space for a future walking and cycling path. Drivers are urged to stay cautious near ongoing work.

Major local stories and useful updates, once a week.
Drivers can cross Cooper Sandy Creek on Freemanville Road again after a bridge replacement closed the Milton route for nearly five months.
The rebuilt bridge reopened to traffic in both directions Friday, Oct. 23, more than a week ahead of the projected end-of-October opening. The crossing is south of Providence Road and north of Landrum Road.
The reopening ends the detour that began May 26, when the old bridge closed for demolition and replacement. The Milton Journal reported the reopening, citing the city’s announcement.
The road is open; work continues
Crews will remain around the bridge over the coming months to complete other parts of the project. Drivers should continue watching for workers and following signs through the construction area.
The Georgia Department of Transportation is overseeing the replacement. Its contractor, Williams Contracting, spent the summer preparing the new span after removing the old structure. By July, crews were getting ready to install prestressed concrete beams and build the bridge’s superstructure, the city said in a construction update.
The replacement includes a lane in each direction, shoulders and room for a future walking and cycling path. The provision for a future path does not mean a new trail is opening with the bridge.
For people who have spent the summer and early fall routing around the closure, the immediate change is straightforward: Freemanville Road is once again a through route across the creek.
