North Atlanta Residents May Want to Rethink Driving During the 2026 World Cup

As Atlanta prepares to host eight FIFA World Cup matches between June 15 and July 15, 2026 — including a semifinal on July 15 at Atlanta Stadium — transportation officials are already warning that driving downtown during match days could become one of the most difficult parts of the entire experience.
MARTA is positioning itself as the primary transportation system for the tournament, with expanded rail service, increased staffing, multilingual transit ambassadors and direct stadium connections expected throughout the event.
For residents in suburbs like Alpharetta, Johns Creek, Roswell, Milton, Dunwoody and South Forsyth, the World Cup may become one of the biggest transportation stress tests metro Atlanta has seen since the 1996 Olympics.
Among the matches scheduled for Atlanta are Spain vs. Cape Verde on June 15, South Africa vs. Czechia on June 18, Spain vs. Saudi Arabia on June 21, Morocco vs. Haiti on June 24, and Uzbekistan vs. Congo DR on June 27. Atlanta will also host a Round of 32 match on July 1, a Round of 16 match on July 7, and a World Cup semifinal on July 15.
The scale of the event is expected to reshape normal movement patterns across much of metro Atlanta, especially along the GA-400 corridor and around downtown connector routes.
MARTA officials are strongly encouraging visitors and local residents alike to avoid stadium parking altogether and instead use rail stations including Five Points, Vine City and SEC District stations for direct stadium access.
For many North Fulton and South Forsyth residents, North Springs Station may become one of the region’s most important transportation gateways during the tournament. The station already functions as the northern anchor of MARTA’s Red Line and offers parking access for suburban commuters heading into Atlanta.
The agency says match-day operations will include more frequent service, extended operating hours when needed, enhanced signage and on-site staff positioned throughout stations to help visitors navigate the system.
One of the more unusual parts of MARTA’s World Cup planning is the effort to transform stations themselves into part of the fan experience.
According to MARTA’s World Cup transit guide, stations and trains are expected to feature soccer-themed wraps, fan activations, merchandise areas, watch parties and “StationSoccer” activities connected to the Soccer in the Streets nonprofit initiative.
The StationSoccer concept first launched inside Five Points Station in 2016 and later expanded to multiple rail stations across Atlanta. MARTA describes it as part of a broader effort to connect transit infrastructure with Atlanta’s growing soccer culture.
The transportation push also highlights how much Atlanta’s airport and transit system will become intertwined during the tournament.
MARTA rail service connects directly to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, allowing international visitors to travel from baggage claim to downtown and the stadium area without using a car.
That airport-to-stadium rail connection is expected to become heavily used during the tournament, particularly as Atlanta hotels fill across Buckhead, Midtown, Sandy Springs and the northern suburbs.
MARTA fares currently remain $2.50, with Breeze cards, contactless payment options and multi-day passes expected to handle much of the increased ridership.
Officials are also emphasizing accessibility and safety planning ahead of the tournament, including ADA-accessible stations, elevators, MARTA police presence and the See & Say safety reporting app.
