Georgia Access Opens Enrollment With Higher Stakes for Income Estimates

Georgia Access enrollment for 2027 opens November 1. Workers with changing income face full repayment of excess advance premium tax credits, and local enrollment help is available.

North Atlanta workers who buy their own health insurance can begin choosing 2027 coverage Sunday, November 1. For freelancers, independent contractors and families with changing paychecks, the application’s income estimate carries a financial risk: receiving too much help with premiums can leave them owing the full excess at tax time.

Georgia Access enrollment runs through January 15, 2027, but December 15 is the deadline for coverage that begins January 1. People enrolling after that deadline, through January 15, will have coverage beginning February 1.

Premium tax credits can be paid to an insurer in advance, reducing a household’s monthly bill. The final credit is calculated when the household files its federal tax return. Beginning with tax year 2026, federal repayment caps no longer apply: taxpayers must repay the entire amount by which advance credits exceed the credit they actually qualify for. That can reduce a refund or increase a tax bill.

The rule already affects this year’s coverage. A raise, a second job or a spouse returning to work can change the calculation before a family ever chooses its 2027 plan. Georgia Access requires households to report income changes within 30 days so financial assistance can be adjusted.

For next year’s application, the relevant figure is expected 2027 household income. Last year’s earnings alone may not reflect a new job, fewer hours or a growing business. Self-employed applicants report net income after business expenses. If asked to verify it, they can provide a detailed ledger of income and expenses; no single ledger format is required.

Returning customers also need to review their renewal notices, which identify changes in premiums and estimated financial assistance. Georgia Access automatically re-enrolls customers in existing coverage, but anyone whose insurer is no longer offering plans in their area for 2027 must select another plan.

Local application help is available through BPSOS Atlanta, whose Norcross-area office is at 6107 Oakbrook Parkway. Its healthcare navigation team assists individuals and families with marketplace enrollment. Call 770-458-6700 to arrange assistance. BPSOS is one of Georgia Access’s two navigator grantees for 2027.

Residents elsewhere in North Atlanta can use the state’s free local-assistance directory to find a certified agent or application assister. Agents can recommend specific plans; assisters explain options and help with enrollment but cannot recommend which plan to buy. Georgia Access also provides application and enrollment support at 888-687-1503.
