Play It Again Sports Sets Sept. 3 Opening in Cumming

A new Cumming sporting-goods store will give families a place to buy equipment—and earn money or store credit from gear their children have outgrown.

Play It Again Sports will open Thursday, Sept. 3, at 580 Atlanta Road, Suite 203-B. A four-day grand-opening celebration will continue through Sunday, Sept. 6, with shopping, giveaways and other activities.

The independently operated franchise buys, sells and trades new and used sports and fitness equipment. Its arrival introduces a different kind of resale business to a county where families can face substantial costs when children join a team, change sports or quickly outgrow cleats, bats and protective gear.

Unlike a conventional sporting-goods store, Play It Again Sports builds part of its inventory by purchasing equipment directly from local customers. Accepted items are evaluated according to their condition, safety and current demand, with sellers receiving cash or credit toward another purchase.

That trade-in model may be particularly useful in Forsyth County, where youth leagues, school teams, travel programs and private sports organizations create a steady demand for equipment. A baseball bat, lacrosse stick or pair of soccer cleats that no longer fits one athlete may still have several seasons left for another.

The store’s selection covers team sports such as baseball, softball, football, soccer, basketball, lacrosse, hockey and volleyball, along with golf, tennis, pickleball, disc golf and exercise equipment. Inventory will change regularly because many products come from customers rather than a centralized warehouse.

The Cumming shop has already begun acquiring equipment as it prepares for the opening. Its local inventory includes both used and new merchandise, allowing shoppers to compare options at different prices rather than choosing only among current-season products.

That combination also gives the business a potential advantage over online resale. Families can inspect equipment in person, confirm that it fits and avoid arranging exchanges with individual sellers. The store, meanwhile, handles pricing and places accepted items back into circulation.

The environmental benefit is straightforward as well. Sports gear that might otherwise remain unused in a garage or be discarded can return to a field, court or home gym.

Play It Again Sports is part of Winmark Corp., a resale-franchise company whose other brands include Once Upon A Child and Plato’s Closet. Each location is independently owned and operated.

The Cumming opening comes as Atlanta Road continues to attract businesses serving everyday local needs. The store sits south of downtown Cumming and close to residential communities, schools and youth-sports facilities across central Forsyth.

Its location also places it within reach of families traveling between Cumming and South Forsyth, without requiring a trip to a regional mall or a larger sporting-goods center.

Regular hours will be 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. The store can be reached at 470-239-3498.
