Bakery in Cumming

Scout’s Sourdough has opened at 5535 Bannister Road, bringing a homegrown baking business into the same building where owner Scout Samples held one of her first jobs.

The address is familiar to Samples in a way few new business locations could be. She grew up about five minutes away and once worked there when the building was home to Burger Stop. Years later, she has returned as the owner, filling the space with sourdough loaves, cinnamon rolls and the unmistakable smell of a working bakery.

Scout’s Sourdough celebrated its grand opening June 19, becoming what it describes as Forsyth County’s first storefront devoted entirely to sourdough. The milestone marks the transformation of a home-based operation into a permanent neighborhood bakery.

From Home Kitchen to Storefront

Samples is a self-taught baker who began building the business after becoming a mother and searching for work she could pursue from home. She had previously worked as a veterinary technician, but sourdough gradually moved from a personal interest to a full-time career.

The business grew through direct orders, farmers markets, community events and partnerships with other local shops. Samples has said sales increased by more than 80% during one recent year, growth that eventually made a storefront seem less like a distant ambition and more like the natural next step.

The new bakery offers traditional and flavored sourdough loaves along with softer sandwich bread and sweet items such as cinnamon rolls, cookies, scones and brownies. Coffee and other bakery-counter offerings make it possible to stop in for breakfast or a treat rather than purchasing only a loaf to take home.

During its opening days, the bakery warned customers that popular items could sell out, an encouraging problem for a business still learning the rhythm of operating from a permanent kitchen.

A Different Kind of Cumming Opening

Much of Forsyth County’s restaurant growth arrives through established regional and national chains. Scout’s Sourdough represents something smaller and more personal: a local baker moving from markets and home production into a storefront rooted in her own history.

The full-circle setting gives the opening a meaning beyond the menu. The young employee who once reported for work at Burger Stop now unlocks the same building each morning as its business owner.

Scout’s Sourdough is located at 5535 Bannister Road in Cumming. Because hours and inventory may change during the bakery’s opening period, customers should check its social media pages before making a special trip.
