From Vietnam Patrols to Dunwoody Service: Art Katz to Speak on Veterans Day

Vietnam veteran and Dunwoody resident Art Katz will speak at the Veterans Day ceremony at Brook Run Park, sharing his experience and lifelong commitment to service.

Art Katz commanded a Coast Guard cutter in Vietnam. Decades later, his service closer to home has included rescuing food, supporting veterans and volunteering in Dunwoody.

On Nov. 11, the Dunwoody resident will be the featured speaker at the city’s Veterans Day ceremony, bringing that experience to a public gathering at Brook Run Park.

Arthur “Art” Katz graduated with honors from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in 1963. During the Vietnam War, he took command of the Coast Guard Cutter Point Cypress, leading a newly assembled crew through combat operations after the vessel was rapidly converted from a search-and-rescue cutter to a wartime patrol boat.

His military honors include the Bronze Star with combat designation, the Navy Commendation Medal and multiple Republic of Vietnam medals. He was inducted into the Coast Guard Academy’s Hall of Heroes in 2010.

Katz’s civilian service has included work with veterans’ organizations, local nonprofit boards, interfaith outreach and the City of Dunwoody. He has also volunteered in food-rescue efforts with Second Helpings Atlanta.

“We are honored to continue this meaningful Dunwoody tradition and to recognize veterans like Art Katz, whose service and lifelong commitment to others inspire us all,” Mayor Lynn Deutsch said in the city’s announcement.

A public gathering at Brook Run Park

The ceremony begins at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11, at Veterans Memorial Plaza in Brook Run Park, 4770 N. Peachtree Road. It is free and open to the public and will take place rain or shine.

Dunwoody Police Chief Mike Carlson, a retired Georgia National Guard captain, will serve as master of ceremonies. Council Member Joe Seconder, a retired U.S. Army major, will lead the Pledge of Allegiance. The Rev. Eric Burton-Krieger, associate pastor at Dunwoody United Methodist Church, will give the invocation and benediction.

Dunwoody Parks and Recreation is hosting the ceremony with support from Dunwoody/Sandy Springs VFW Post 10822 and the Dunwoody Woman’s Club.

Keep it. Pass it on.
