Social Security Raise Gives North Atlanta Retirees More Income and Room to Work

Social Security benefits for North Atlanta retirees will rise 3.6% in 2027, adding about $75 per month. Working retirees can also earn more before benefits are reduced.

North Atlanta residents collecting Social Security will receive a 3.6% benefit increase in 2027, while retirees who work before reaching full retirement age will be able to earn more before their benefits are reduced.

The changes affect two parts of a household budget: the monthly retirement payment and the paycheck from a part-time job or continued career. The increase announced Oct. 14 will add about $75 a month to the average retirement benefit nationally, beginning in January. Individual increases will depend on each recipient’s benefit amount.

Social Security already reaches tens of thousands of households across the northern suburbs. In December 2025, Forsyth County had 36,385 beneficiaries, Cherokee County had 55,200 and Gwinnett County had 133,180. Those countywide totals include retirement, survivor and disability beneficiaries.

A higher earnings limit for working retirees

People receiving retirement benefits who remain below full retirement age throughout 2027 can earn $25,560 before Social Security withholds benefits under its retirement earnings test. That is $1,080 more than this year’s limit.

The 2027 adjustments distinguish between people approaching full retirement age and those who have reached it:

Retirement status2027 earnings rule
Below full retirement age all year$1 in benefits withheld for every $2 earned above $25,560
Reaching full retirement age during 2027$1 withheld for every $3 earned above $67,920, counting only earnings before the month full retirement age is reached
At full retirement age or olderNo retirement earnings limit beginning with that month

These are benefit-withholding thresholds, not limits on how much someone is allowed to earn.

For this test, Social Security generally counts wages and net earnings from self-employment, rather than pensions or investment income. At full retirement age, Social Security adjusts the monthly benefit to credit months when payments were reduced or withheld because of excess earnings.

November deadline for an early look at payments

Recipients can see their individual increase online beginning in late November. People without a my Social Security account must create one and enroll in paperless notices by Nov. 18 to receive their notice online. Paper notices will arrive in December.

The personalized notice will give the new benefit amount, payment dates and deductions. For households planning next year’s spending, that figure matters more than the national average increase because deductions, including Medicare premiums, affect the amount deposited.

Keep it. Pass it on.
