OCT Chai Bar Nears Opening in Roswell With Regional Indian Teas and a Reading Lounge

Roswell is preparing to welcome a café built around something that usually gets only a line or two on the coffee-shop menu.
OCT Chai Bar is nearing an opening at 580 E. Crossville Road, Suite 400, with a menu centered on freshly prepared chai, regional Indian teas and a small selection of food. The roughly 25-seat café will also include a lounge and bookshelves, giving customers room to stay rather than simply pick up a drink and leave.
The business had been targeting late August or the first week of September after construction delays. As of Sept. 6, a firm opening day has not been announced, but the build-out was described as being in its final stage.
What makes OCT unusual is the decision to put chai itself at the center of the business.
Coffee shops across North Atlanta commonly sell chai lattes, often made from a prepared concentrate. OCT — short for Organic Chai Theory — is being developed around a broader idea of chai as a category, with different spices, strengths, milk choices and tea traditions rather than a single standardized drink.
The café plans to serve teas associated with several parts of India and South Asia, including Assam and Darjeeling, along with spiced chai and herbal blends. Current offerings from OCT Chai Bar include original chai, adrak — ginger — chai and cardamom chai.
Food will play a supporting role. Paneer parantha, a whole-wheat stuffed flatbread cooked with ghee, is among the items already introduced, and the café has been developing a broader assortment of wholesome snacks and light dishes to accompany the tea.
The idea has been years in the making.
OCT’s founder traces the concept to Chicago in 2016, when finding a fresh cup of ginger chai during the workday was unexpectedly difficult. The frustration eventually became a larger question: why should chai drinkers have to treat the drink as an occasional alternative at a coffee shop instead of having a café designed around it?
That experience also shaped the kind of space OCT is trying to create.
In Indian homes, workplaces and roadside tea stalls, chai often functions as much as an invitation to talk as a drink. OCT is attempting to bring some of that rhythm into suburban Roswell — a place for a quick cup, but also for reading, working or sitting with someone for longer than it takes to finish one.
Customers will still find a limited amount of coffee, but owner Preeti Thukral has described the business primarily as a chai bar, with most ingredients expected to be organic and tea leaves imported from India. Both sit-down and grab-and-go service are planned.
The small reading area may prove just as important to the character of the place. Shelves will hold books from different genres, giving the 25-seat room something closer to a neighborhood reading café than a conventional beverage counter.
