After 35 Years, Giorgio’s Remains a Cumming Family Kitchen

Long before Cumming became one of metro Atlanta’s fastest-growing suburban communities, Dimitri and Eleni Tzortzis opened a restaurant in Lakeland Plaza with a straightforward ambition: prepare familiar food carefully and make customers feel welcome.

That was in 1991. Thirty-five years later, Giorgio’s Family Kitchen remains in the same Cumming shopping center, still serving the Italian and Greek comfort food on which the restaurant built its reputation.

The milestone matters in a region where the restaurant landscape changes quickly. New dining districts have emerged, national chains have multiplied and Forsyth County’s population has grown several times over. Giorgio’s has survived those changes without abandoning the identity of a traditional family restaurant.

Its longevity is not an accidental part of the story. Both Dimitri and Eleni came from families with restaurant experience. The Tzortzis family’s history in the business extends to restaurants in Georgia, Chicago, Nashville and Chattanooga, with roots reaching back to the 1950s.

Their son, Constantine Tzortzis, eventually became a partner in the restaurant, bringing a second generation into the Cumming business. That continuity gives Giorgio’s something increasingly uncommon: a family history that stretches across cities and generations but remains anchored to one familiar Forsyth County address.

The restaurant’s name may suggest a narrowly Italian menu, but Giorgio’s has always occupied a broader culinary territory. Pizza and pasta share the kitchen with Greek and Mediterranean dishes, salads, sandwiches and American favorites. The mixture reflects the kind of family restaurant designed to accommodate an entire table rather than demand that everyone arrive wanting the same thing.

That range has practical value. A family can order pizza for the children, pasta or a Greek entrée for the adults and still settle the question of dinner through a single restaurant. It is not experimental cooking, nor does it pretend to be. Giorgio’s strength is familiarity: food intended to satisfy, travel well and become part of a household’s routine.

The kitchen emphasizes work still performed in-house. Pizza dough is prepared daily, sauces are made at the restaurant and salads are assembled from fresh ingredients rather than arriving premixed in bags. Those details may sound modest, but they help explain how an independent restaurant maintains its character over several decades.

Giorgio’s longstanding carryout pizza offer has become another part of that identity. Its buy-one, get-one takeout tradition dates to the restaurant’s early years and has endured as Forsyth County changed around it. The promotion has made the restaurant especially useful on evenings when feeding a family matters more than arranging a formal night out.

Local recognition has followed. Giorgio’s reports winning Best of Forsyth honors for 12 consecutive years, including recognition as the county’s best takeout option in 2026. Previous honors have included categories such as pizza, Italian food and service.

Awards alone, however, do not sustain a restaurant for 35 years. Longevity comes from occupying a dependable place in people’s lives.

During Giorgio’s first years, Forsyth County was a far smaller and less developed community. Many of today’s neighborhoods, schools, commercial centers and subdivisions did not yet exist. Customers who first visited the restaurant as young adults may now return with children or grandchildren. Employees and regular customers have also remained connected to the business across the years.

That accumulation of ordinary visits is part of what separates a longstanding local restaurant from a new dining concept. A restaurant operating for several decades becomes associated not only with its menu, but with birthdays, team dinners, takeout nights and family gatherings. Its dining room quietly collects pieces of the community’s history.

Giorgio’s has adapted to contemporary habits without giving up that older role. Customers can order online, join a loyalty program or arrange catering for offices, weddings, school events and family celebrations. The restaurant also offers family-sized pans capable of feeding larger groups. These additions recognize how people now use restaurants while preserving the central idea of food meant to be shared.

The family element remains visible in the business’s public identity. Dimitri and Eleni established the restaurant; Constantine represents the generation carrying it forward. That transition is significant for any independent restaurant. Opening a business requires risk and energy, but passing it from one generation to the next requires the family to decide that the original work is still worth continuing.

In 2026, Giorgio’s is neither Cumming’s newest restaurant nor its most fashionable. That may be precisely why its anniversary deserves attention. The restaurant represents something quieter: the ability of an independently owned family business to remain useful, recognizable and local through decades of suburban transformation.

North Atlanta’s dining scene benefits from new arrivals and ambitious ideas. It also benefits from places that remember what the community looked like before much of the present landscape was built.

At 35, Giorgio’s Family Kitchen is still making pizza dough, filling takeout orders and welcoming families at 558 Lakeland Plaza. In a county accustomed to rapid change, simply continuing to set the table has become an achievement of its own.
