Japanese Sushi and Steakhouse Planned for Former On The Border in Alpharetta
A new Japanese sushi and steakhouse called Sapporo is coming to Alpharetta's former On The Border restaurant near North Point Mall. The project is in renovation stages with no opening date yet.

A Japanese sushi and steakhouse is preparing to take over the former On The Border restaurant near North Point Mall in Alpharetta.
Sapporo Sushi & Steak House is planned for 10575 Davis Drive, a freestanding restaurant property near North Point Parkway and Mansell Road. The project is moving through the renovation and build-out process, although an opening date has not yet been announced.
Plans for the restaurant include changes to the exterior of the building as well as interior construction needed to convert the former Tex-Mex restaurant into a Japanese dining concept.
The new restaurant appears to be connected with Sapporo Japanese Sushi & Steak House in Douglasville. That location combines sushi, hibachi-style dishes, Japanese entrées and steakhouse selections. A final menu for the Alpharetta restaurant has not been released.
The Davis Drive building was occupied for years by On The Border Mexican Grill & Cantina. In 2021, the Alpharetta restaurant became the first in the national chain to introduce a redesigned prototype, with updated dining spaces and a more contemporary appearance.
Its replacement by Sapporo marks another change in the large commercial district surrounding North Point Mall, where older restaurant properties are gradually finding new operators as the wider area awaits more substantial redevelopment.
The North Point corridor remains one of Alpharetta’s busiest concentrations of restaurants, retailers and entertainment businesses. Its location near Ga. 400 and several major employment centers continues to make existing restaurant buildings attractive to operators seeking established sites with visibility and parking.
Rather than constructing a restaurant from the ground up, Sapporo will reuse a building already designed for full-service dining. That can shorten the development process, although extensive kitchen, dining-room and exterior work may still be required before opening.
The restaurant has not announced a target opening season or begun publicly advertising for employees. More information is expected as construction progresses.
When it opens, Sapporo will add another full-service Asian restaurant to the North Point area while bringing a prominent vacant restaurant property back into use.
