Creative Enterprises Opens Expanded Forsyth Campus With Capacity to Serve 200 Adults

A new building in Cumming has opened with a purpose far beyond adding more square footage.
Creative Enterprises cut the ribbon Thursday, Aug. 27, on an expansion designed to significantly increase vocational training, employment support and daily programming for Forsyth County adults with developmental disabilities.
The nonprofit’s campus at 410 Pilgrim Mill Road can now serve as many as 200 adults, roughly doubling its previous capacity. The opening follows about a year of construction and responds to growing demand from local families seeking meaningful opportunities for adults after they leave the school system.
Creative Enterprises provides a combination of classroom learning, practical life-skills instruction, recreation, arts programs and employment preparation. Participants may learn tasks ranging from managing money and preparing meals to developing the habits and workplace skills needed for a paying job.
Its production program also allows adults with varying levels of ability to complete work for local businesses in a supervised setting while earning a paycheck. Employment services extend beyond the campus through job placement, workplace training and continuing support.
Those programs can fill a difficult gap for families.
Students with disabilities often receive structured educational services through their public schools, but those supports change after graduation. Parents and caregivers may then struggle to find suitable daytime programs, job training and opportunities for continued social development close to home.
The expanded Cumming campus creates room for more adults to remain active in their community rather than traveling farther for services or spending extended periods at home.
The facility’s programming includes academics built around everyday situations, cooking and housekeeping instruction, fitness activities, music, art, horticulture and animal therapy. Community outings are incorporated through what Creative Enterprises calls “Classrooms Without Walls.”
A mobile ice cream business, Creative Scoops, gives interested participants another way to practice customer service and other job skills at schools, churches, sporting events and local businesses.
Creative Enterprises is a nonprofit community rehabilitation organization serving people with disabilities and others who encounter barriers to employment. Its services include vocational rehabilitation, supported employment, job coaching and programs funded through Georgia’s NOW and COMP Medicaid waivers.
The organization operates additional campuses in Gwinnett, Dawson and White counties, but the Forsyth expansion carries particular local significance.
Forsyth County’s rapid population growth has increased demand for schools, medical care and recreation, but growth also creates less visible needs. A larger population includes more young adults aging out of school-based services and more families searching for long-term support that encourages independence rather than isolation.
The new building represents physical evidence that some of that social infrastructure is beginning to catch up.
Creative Enterprises held an open house after Thursday evening’s ribbon-cutting, allowing families and community members to tour the completed space and learn about its programs.
