Grove and Barrel Brings a Barcelona Pantry to Downtown Alpharetta

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Downtown Alpharetta’s newest arrival is neither a restaurant nor a conventional grocery store. Grove and Barrel Provisions, a specialty market shaped by the food and hosting traditions of Southern Europe, will open Friday, Aug. 14, at Alpharetta City Center.
The market will carry European olive oils, infused vinegars, rice, pasta, sauces, canned and brined foods, coffee and selected wines. Shoppers will also find cheese boards, kitchen utensils, gourmet gift baskets and other items intended for gathering around the table rather than simply restocking the pantry.
From Barcelona to Alpharetta
Grove and Barrel is the creation of Josep Juncosa, a Barcelona native whose hospitality career has included work with Ritz-Carlton, Conrad Hotels & Resorts, InterContinental Hotels and Loews Hotels. His idea for the store grew from the long meals, shared ingredients and informal hospitality he remembers from home.
“Sharing the table with my friends and family was a cherished experience,” Juncosa said in announcing the opening. “I learned how powerful simple but quality ingredients could truly be.”
That background gives Grove and Barrel a more personal identity than the growing number of specialty-food brands appearing around metro Atlanta. The store is built around a particular way of eating and entertaining: fewer ingredients, carefully selected, with the meal treated as a social occasion rather than a hurried obligation.
The concept also extends beyond retail shelves. Grove and Barrel plans to organize private group tastings, offer food and wine pairing guidance and help customers create personalized salad dressings. Juncosa also intends to work with area restaurants interested in purchasing some of the ingredients carried by the market.
Another Piece of City Center’s Changing Mix
The arrival adds a different kind of food business to Alpharetta City Center, the 26-acre district surrounding City Hall and the Town Green. Its combination of restaurants, apartments, shops and public gathering spaces has increasingly made downtown a place where residents can spend an entire afternoon or evening without moving their cars.
Grove and Barrel fits naturally into that pattern. A visitor could stop after the Alpharetta Farmers Market, select a bottle of wine and a few pantry ingredients, or book a tasting as part of a small group outing. For residents of the neighboring Amorance apartments, it also functions as a walkable specialty market.
The opening comes during another period of growth at City Center. Sandbox VR recently opened there, while Amasa Mexican Kitchen and Giulia Bakery, an Italian panetteria and pasticceria, are expected to follow. Together, the additions point toward a downtown retail mix increasingly centered on experiences—places where visitors do something, taste something or learn something rather than simply make a purchase.
