A 7 Brew Is Coming to Sugar Hill—and It Says Something About North Atlanta’s Coffee Boom
A new 7 Brew drive-through stand is planned for Sugar Hill on Highway 20, serving commuters with quick, car-friendly coffee and beverages. The project signals growing demand for drive-through coffee options across North Atlanta suburbs.

A small piece of land along Highway 20 is preparing for a distinctly modern suburban use: coffee without the coffee shop.
A commercial-development permit has been issued for a new 7 Brew at 5942 Cumming Highway in Sugar Hill. The drive-through beverage stand will occupy less than an acre near existing restaurants and shopping, adding another recognizable name to one of northern Gwinnett’s busiest commercial corridors.
No opening date has been announced. But the project is far enough along to be more than a proposal. Sugar Hill approved the property’s annexation and rezoning last fall, and Gwinnett County issued the commercial-development permit July 14. The developer is Rocket Brew Inc., which also operates 7 Brew locations elsewhere in the region.
The arrival is local news for Sugar Hill, but it is also part of a larger change becoming increasingly visible across North Atlanta. Coffee chains are no longer necessarily building cafés. Some of the fastest-growing brands are constructing compact stands designed almost entirely around cars, cold drinks and a few minutes saved during the morning commute.
A Coffee Stand Built Around Highway 20
The Sugar Hill location is planned beside the Zaxby’s and Chipotle properties, with access expected through the existing traffic signal rather than a separate entrance directly onto Highway 20.
That arrangement matters on a road where almost every new business must account for traffic moving between Sugar Hill, Cumming and the Mall of Georgia area. It also places 7 Brew where the chain wants to be: directly in the path of commuters, school traffic, shopping trips and afternoon errands.

The site had been zoned for residential use before Sugar Hill approved its conversion to general business. City records describe it as a narrow, irregularly shaped property with homes behind it.
The approved conditions include an undisturbed buffer at the rear of the property. The business also will not use outdoor ordering speakers. Instead, employees are expected to approach vehicles and take orders on tablets, one of the defining features of the 7 Brew model.
The result will not resemble a traditional Starbucks with tables, laptops and customers lingering over coffee. It is closer to a small beverage-production line with two drive-through lanes, a limited building footprint and nearly every customer remaining inside a vehicle.
Why These Stands Are Appearing So Quickly
Drive-through coffee is not new, but the stand-alone version has become one of the restaurant industry’s most aggressive growth categories.
North Atlanta already has operating 7 Brew locations on Highway 9 in Milton and near the Mall of Georgia in Buford. Ellianos, a regional drive-through chain founded in Florida, opened its Cumming location at 1200 Town Green Circle in 2023. Similar concepts are seeking high-visibility sites across fast-growing suburban communities where long commutes and car-based routines make convenience especially valuable.
The pandemic accelerated the appeal of businesses that could serve customers without bringing them indoors, but the model has lasted because it fits suburban behavior beyond any temporary health concern.
Coffee is only part of the equation. 7 Brew’s menu extends well beyond espresso to energy drinks, teas, lemonades, smoothies, shakes and flavored sodas, with a lot of possible combinations.
The Chain Behind Sugar Hill’s New Arrival
7 Brew began in Rogers, Arkansas, in 2017 with a menu built around seven original coffee drinks. Its expansion accelerated after the company began a national push in 2022 and received a growth investment from Blackstone in 2024.
The chain opened its 777th stand in June and now operates across 38 states. It entered 2022 with only 14 locations, illustrating how quickly a recognizable national chain can now appear in local markets. The company has announced plans for hundreds of additional openings during 2026.
