Amasa Mexican Kitchen has put dates on its long-awaited arrival in downtown Alpharetta.
The new restaurant at 15 Academy St. will begin a three-week soft opening Thursday, Aug. 27, with limited dinner reservations each evening. Its grand opening is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 18.
That makes Amasa one of the more substantial restaurant openings downtown this year, both in size and ambition.
The Baja California-inspired restaurant is taking over the former Jekyll Brewing space at Alpharetta City Center and will operate across two levels, with a bar, family dining area, private rooms and a dedicated tequila room upstairs.
Amasa comes from TQM Hospitality, the group behind Chichería Mexican Kitchen at The Works in Atlanta and Buena Vida Tapas Bar along the Eastside BeltLine. Alpharetta is the group’s first restaurant location outside the Perimeter.
The menu is entirely gluten-free and leans heavily toward seafood and the coastal cooking of Baja California. Diners can expect Baja fish tacos, ceviche, carne asada fries, fajitas, fresh seafood and tacos served on tortillas made in-house from organic, non-GMO blue corn.
One of those dishes has already had a local test run. Amasa’s Baja fish taco won Best Entrée at the 2026 Taste of Alpharetta before the restaurant had opened its doors.
Owner Juan Sebastian Calle has said the restaurant was designed to give diners the feeling of a short trip to Baja rather than simply adding another Mexican menu to the suburbs. Executive Chef Joey Vazquez is leading the kitchen.
The drinks program will center on tequila, margaritas and cocktails, with the upstairs tequila room intended for tastings as well as regular service. Plans also call for live music, tasting dinners, tequila classes and other events.
During the soft opening, dinner will run from 4 to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and from 4 to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The restaurant says the full dinner and drink menus will be available, although some dishes may sell out while the kitchen and dining room work through their first weeks of service. Reservations are limited, with walk-ins accepted when space is available.
Amasa is also planning programming that could make it a daytime destination after the full opening. A Sunday Mexican brunch buffet is scheduled to begin Sept. 20, with more than 20 offerings, while weekday oyster happy hour and weekly family and trivia nights are also planned.
Amasa Mexican Kitchen is at 15 Academy St., Space 1E, at Alpharetta City Center. Soft-opening reservations begin Aug. 27, with the official grand opening set for Sept. 18.
