Norcross Has a Little-Known Place in America’s Supplement Aisle

Get major local stories and development updates.
The rows of vitamins and supplements in North Atlanta stores may look like a collection of national brands, but part of the industry behind those bottles operates here in Georgia.
In Norcross, NutraCap manufactures dietary supplements for companies that sell products under their own names. Its Gwinnett County operation produces capsules, nutritional powders and sports-nutrition formulas while also handling formulation, packaging and label design.
The arrangement is common in the supplement business. A brand does not necessarily own the factory producing its vitamins. Many hire contract manufacturers to blend ingredients, fill capsules or containers and prepare the finished products for sale.
That makes the name on the front of a bottle only one part of its story.
From Norcross to store shelves
NutraCap’s Norcross facility can manufacture custom formulas as well as ready-made products sold under private labels. Its relatively small minimum orders also allow emerging businesses to launch supplement lines without building factories of their own.
The local operation does not mean every product sold in North Atlanta was made in Gwinnett County. Manufacturers generally serve multiple clients, brands may use several factories, and the production location is not always obvious from the front label.
Still, the Norcross plant places part of a large national wellness industry directly inside North Atlanta’s coverage area.
Another Georgia operation works at a larger scale
About 75 miles northeast of Atlanta, Pharma Tech Industries operates a manufacturing facility in Royston specializing in nonsterile dry powders.
The plant blends and packages products for pharmaceutical, nutritional-health and medical-food companies. Its production formats include bottles, jars, pouches, sachets and individual stick packs.
Unlike the Norcross operation, the Royston facility is not designed for conventional capsules or swallow tablets. Its strength is large-scale powder production and packaging for products associated with sports nutrition, digestive health, immune support and other health markets.
Together, the two facilities give Georgia a place in several stages of supplement production, from formulation and encapsulation to high-volume blending and packaging.
The industry extends across the South
Georgia is part of a larger Southern supplement-manufacturing network.
Santa Cruz Nutritionals expanded gummy-vitamin manufacturing in Sumter County, South Carolina, through an $84 million investment expected to create 164 jobs. In Florida, Funtrition opened a 62,000-square-foot facility in 2024 for developing, producing, packaging and storing nutritional gummies.
Those operations reflect the growing popularity of supplements sold in forms other than traditional pills. Gummies, powders, drink mixes and single-serving packets now occupy increasing amounts of shelf space alongside multivitamin tablets and capsules.
Local production is not a quality guarantee
Where a supplement is manufactured can be useful information, but geography alone does not establish its quality or effectiveness.
The Food and Drug Administration does not approve dietary supplements before they are sold. Manufacturers must follow federal production standards governing identity, purity, strength and composition, and their facilities may be inspected by the FDA.
An FDA-registered facility should not be confused with an FDA-approved product.
Consumers can examine labels for ingredient amounts, serving sizes and the company responsible for manufacturing or distributing the product. Independent testing seals can provide additional information, while a doctor or pharmacist can help identify possible medication interactions or unnecessarily high doses.
Behind North Atlanta’s crowded vitamin shelves is a supply chain that stretches across the country. A little-known portion of it, however, begins in Norcross.
